A Flourishing Market
In the United States, the yacht market achieved a substantial size of $2.7 billion in 2021. Concurrently, China’s yacht market is on a comparable growth trajectory, expected to attain $1.2 billion by 2026. The Monaco fleet of superyachts, a symbol of luxury and prestige, was valued at €3.1 billion in 2021, reflecting the region’s enduring prominence in the superyacht sector.
Market Dynamics
The yachting market’s diverse segments are showing significant growth patterns. Yachts ranging from 24 to 45 meters are forecasted to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 5% until 2027. Motor propulsion yachts continue to dominate the market, capturing an 80% share in 2020. The flybridge yacht segment, known for its spaciousness and luxury, is a primary driver of the luxury yacht market’s rapid growth, contributing to a 6.1% increase in key regions, including the U.S., Canada, Japan, China, and Europe.
Industry Milestones and Achievements
Over the past decade, the industry has seen the introduction of approximately 100 new yachts annually between 2010 and 2020. This consistent expansion has led to a fleet of over 5,000 luxury yachts, each exceeding 24 meters in length, now navigating the world’s oceans. A key highlight of the yachting calendar is the Monaco Formula 1 Grand Prix, which attracts yachts worth €2 billion annually, underscoring the sector’s association with high-profile global events.
Employment and Economic Impact
The luxury yacht industry also plays a crucial role in employment, supporting a workforce of approximately 148,000 to 163,000 individuals. This includes a wide range of professions from shipbuilding to yacht maintenance and management, highlighting the sector’s significant economic impact and its contribution to numerous livelihoods.
Pioneering Sustainability
In response to growing environmental concerns, the yachting industry is making notable strides towards sustainability. Dutch shipyard Oceanco is at the forefront with plans to establish a 100% renewable energy and waste-free facility by 2030. Feadship is set to build the first emission-free yachts by 2025, while German shipyard Lürssen is developing an emissions-free hydrogen-powered yacht expected to launch in the same year. Additionally, the Ferretti Group aims to reduce its shipyard’s electricity use by 79% through solar power and energy-efficient LED lighting.
Despite these advancements, challenges persist. Notably, two-thirds of the 8,000 metric tons of CO2 produced annually by the top 20 billionaires is attributed to their superyachts. This statistic highlights the ongoing need for further sustainable practices within the industry.
